In May 2009, the bulldozers began to roll and the final chapter of our Capital Campaign project, the renovation and expansion of the original ODC Theater building, officially commenced. The space has been stripped and the original floor boards have been donated to a new dance space in the Mission. After 30 years of preparation, ODC’s two-building cultural center will come to life. The renovated Theater will provide a much improved experience for our audience members and will also include three new studios for classes and rehearsal space, a visual arts gallery, and a café.
Highlights of the project include:
• an improved 170-seat performance space with higher ceilings, new seating, improved ventilation, and a technological upgrade to enhance production values;
• a new 50-seat studio stage;
• three new classroom/rehearsal studios;
• an enlarged lobby and a new visual arts gallery;
• a new mezzanine for staff offices, a media lab, a Center for Technology in Art and Culture, and a Community Help Desk;
• a café/bistro.
Completion of this final stage of our capital campaign will fulfill our long-term goal for a dynamic and sustaining home for dance in San Francisco. The breadth of ODC’s institutional concept and its extensive network of supporters stands as our legacy as much as the buildings themselves. We know that a two-building, cultural center such as this will continue to evolve over time but feel certain that our real contribution to the future rests with the fundamental ideas of quality and inclusion that characterize our programs and the artistic milieu we have built.
